LA PALMA & EL TUCAN

Halvannen time utenfor hovedstaden Bogotá i Colombia, ligger den helt spesielle kaffegården La Palma & El Tucan.

ELIPIDIA ROMERO

Doña Elipidia has been in the coffee industry for all of her life, her parents were also coffee growers and this is why she inherited this same passion and love for the industry. She acquired her farm, Buenos Aires, 50 years ago with her husband. After he passed away 5 years ago, Doña Elipidia decided to share her farm with one of her daughters (Patricia Silva), who now manages all the coffee plantations and land. Before working with her mother, Patricia was working in the closest town Cachipay as a Lawyer, nevertheless she was always driven to work with coffee since it has always been a part of her life. Elipidia is 70 years old, and Patricia is 50 years old, she also has another daughter Claudia who doesn’t work at the farm and lives in Bogota, Claudia is 40 years old. Elipidia has 4 grandsons, but none of them work in the coffee industry and the youngest one is currently studying.

The farm Buenos Aires, is located in the Municipality of Cachipay, at 1500 m.a.s.l, it has an extension of 6 hectares. She has 6.000 trees of Castillo variety and 5.000 trees of Colombia. Apart from Coffee the farm also has pastures, plantain and mandarin trees, which are for consumption and for shade for the coffee trees, and they recently started to plant tomatoes to provide and additional income. Before selling the coffee to La Palma & El Tucan's project, she used to sell her coffee to the local cooperative and also to some private buyers. All the coffee was processed and dried at her farm and then transported to different processing stations. Doña Elipidia is a current member of the coffee committee of Cachipay and she is very knowledgeable towards all the coffee history in the region. She is also very aware of a big challenge that we have in the coffee industry, which is having young people taking over, and this is why she was very happy to see her daughter Patricia interested in carrying on her same legacy.
