FRA IMPORTØR

The Gititu Factory is a wet mill located in Nyeri, Central Kenya, at an altitude of 1,400-1,600 meters above sea level. Nyeri is known for producing coffees with intense, complex, and flavor-dense cup profiles.

Around 800 smallholders from the surrounding areas deliver cherries to the wet mill. Each smallholder typically manages about 100 trees and is part of a cooperative society that oversees multiple factories (wet mills). The main coffee varieties grown in this region are SL 28 and SL 34.

Processing

Farmers hand-sort cherries to remove unripe and overripe ones before processing. A pulping machine removes the skin and pulp, and the coffee is sorted by density into three grades. Grades 1 and 2 undergo 16-24 hours of fermentation under closed shade, while Grade 3 is considered low grade and is processed separately.

After fermentation, the coffee is washed, further sorted by density, and then soaked in clean water for 16-18 hours.

Drying

The coffee is sun-dried for up to 21 days on African raised drying beds, with plastic covers used during midday and at night.

Soil

The region’s soil is mainly Nitisol, a fertile volcanic soil found in highland areas. These soils have better chemical and physical properties compared to other tropical soils, supporting high-quality coffee production.
