Info from the importer:
This lot has been produced by Andrea Rangel & Renato Pita on their farm, Fazenda Trapia.
Nestled in the highest mountains of Mantiqueira de Minas, within the Baependi municipality, Andrea and Renato oversee Trapiá farm. When they acquired the property, it was home to 20,000 coffee plants, lacking post-harvest infrastructure. Transforming it into a retirement project, the couple embarked on a joint journey of learning about coffee.
Today, Trapiá spans 70 hectares, boasting 190,000 coffee plants and a well-equipped processing facility. This includes three patios, a wet station for cherry separation, a pulping machine, and two dryers. Renato attributes their success to their dedicated team, who have been with them from the outset, understanding the crucial role of meticulous care in specialty coffee production.
Having taken part in the 2021 Especialíssimo Award Ceremony, the producers earned a commendable third place for their specialty coffee. This achievement reflects their unwavering dedication to both quality and sustainability. Andrea and Renato maintain constant communication with the specialty coffee market, seeking updates and striving to enhance their efforts at Fazenda Trapiá year after year.
Impact
Fazenda Trapiá not only ensures fair wages but also organises lectures on health, hygiene, nutrition, and environmental care for all employees and their families.
The farm is committed to sustainability, actively engaged in programs such as diversifying tree species and collaborating with neighbouring farms to establish an eco corridor.
In addition to coffee cultivation, the farm also undertakes significant forestry efforts. Over 40,000 Candeia trees, a native species, have been planted. More than 30% of the land is covered by native vegetation, belonging to the predominant biome of the Atlantic Forest. The farm is home to numerous well-preserved water springs and waterfalls, all surrounded by the local flora. The wildlife thrives in this harmonious environment.
We've procured this coffee through SMC, a company dedicated to sourcing specialty coffees with a keen focus on the well-being of farmers' families. They prioritise transparent and solid partnerships, actively engaging in processes by providing technical support, aiding in harvest and post-harvest planning, introducing innovative projects, and creating informative audiovisual material, among other initiatives.
